On Saturday, January 21, 2023, at “V. Pyrsinellas” Hall in Ioannina, starting at 5:30 p.m., the 6th National Meeting of Guitar Ensembles and Orchestras in Ioannina will take place.
As with the five previous editions, the event is co-organised by the Rodotopi Guitar Ensemble (RGE), the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Ioannina, and the Municipality of Zitsa.
The 6th Meeting follows a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and features ten participating musical institutions from across Greece — primarily guitar ensembles and orchestras from music schools and conservatories.
Below is a presentation of the participating ensembles and their musical programmes.
The order of appearance of each ensemble/orchestra is listed in the printed version of the programme provided at the end.

The orchestra has appeared in several guitar orchestra festivals in Kozani, Veria, Larissa, Bansko, as well as in the choir festival of the Contemporary Conservatory of Larissa. Its philosophy and mission are to provide students with a new dimension of guitar performance and the opportunity to participate in an ensemble, since classical guitar is primarily a solo instrument.

The Guitar Ensemble of the Ioannina Music School “Nikolaos Doumbas” was founded in September 2020 as part of the school’s compulsory guitar ensemble course. It consists of junior high school students, mainly beginners, who have chosen the guitar as their primary instrument.
It has since performed at the Frontzos Theatre in 2022, at the school’s annual final event, as well as at the Silversmithing Museum of Ioannina, under the coordination and instruction of Konstantinos Sifakis and Eleni Kitsouli.

The Rodotopi Guitar Ensemble of Ioannina “Passaron” has been an officially recognized non-profit cultural association since 2012, by decision of the Court of First Instance of Ioannina, while its activities had begun informally a few years earlier. Through the medium of the guitar ensemble, the association aims to contribute to the development of musical education, to the study, interpretation, and presentation of various musical genres, as well as to the collaboration and artistic exchange with other musicians and ensembles.
| RGE Junior, January 2023 |
The name “Passaron” refers to the ancient capital of Epirus, which, among other things, was the homeland of the mother of Alexander the Great.
According to archaeological research and findings from Rodotopi — including sculptures, coins, a column, a marble inscription, a statue, and other artifacts — it is highly probable that ancient Passaron coincides with the area where the Temple of Zeus Areios in Rodotopi is located today.
Since 2012, the Rodotopi Guitar Ensemble has given more than 90 concerts in various Greek cities as well as in Bulgaria and Poland, including:
- The International Music Festival at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall
- Concerts dedicated exclusively to the ensemble, in Ioannina and the wider region (Preveza, Paramythia, Lefkada, Amfilochia)
- European Music Days in Agrinio and Parga
- National Meetings of Guitar Ensembles and Orchestras in Volos, Veria, Larissa, Kozani, Kastoria, and Ioannina
- Student concerts at its own venue in Rodotopi
- Erasmus+ programme participation in Poland
- Other events, including appearances in Velingrad (Bulgaria), the University of Ioannina, the Vellas Alumni Association, the Sifnos Music Festival, the Corfu “Varkarola” Festival, and television productions on local networks.
